Mike Dawson, Assistant Superintendent

The Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) is in full swing. This past week students from Central Park, Monett Intermediate School, Monett Middle School, and Monett High School started our annual state exams. The MAP test is a requirement as part of the No Child Left Behind legislation which mandates that all students in grades three through eight be administered exams for both math and communication arts.  The high school will administer End-of-Course (EOC) exams for a handful of subjects that include Algebra 1, English 1, and U.S. History.  The assessments are designed to measure students’ achievement of the standards that have been taught at each particular grade level or course.

This Week's Building Level and Departmental Update

Monett Intermediate School

Peg Bryan, Principal

In March, Alex Sparkman represented Monett Intermediate School at the Joplin Globe Spelling Bee.  Alex made it through Round #2.   In April, Jonathan Hughes participated in the Missouri State Math Competition in Warrensburg.  We are so proud of their accomplishments and hard work.

Just like schools all over Missouri, Monett Intermediate School has been busy preparing for the annual MAP testing.  Although students learn strategies all year long to help them strengthen their reading, math, science, and writing skills, particular emphasis is placed on helping students to consistently apply those strategies when they are being assessed.

Some MIS students shared what they have learned this year and would like to share it with you!

Monett Library Services
Anne Bryan, MES Librarian

At Monett Elementary School, we are truly blessed with a wonderful library space and an incredible library collection. Our library is spacious with lots of room for students to move around and plenty of reading areas. This large space also accommodates one of the best children’s library collections. We are lucky to have an administration and school board who support our library program.
At MES, students come with their class to the library every week. Class time at the library consists of a library lesson and/or a story and then book-looking and check-out. Lessons focus on basic library principles such as book care, library manners, and how to find books in the library. Other lessons may focus on poetry, fiction or non-fiction, biography, and more. We also learn about some of the different book awards given such as the Caldecott Award, which is given yearly to the illustrator of the best picture book. Kindergarten students participate in the Missouri Building Block Picture Book Award by voting for their favorite book of those nominated. Similarly, first and second grade students vote for their favorite for the Show-Me Award.
