Last spring Monett R-1 was the recipient of the i3 National Writing Project grant. This prestigious honor was made possible through the partnership of Missouri State and the Ozark Writing Project. Monett R-1 was the only school district in the Southwest Region to be selected for this powerful professional development opportunity.  The grant was written to focus upon 7th–10th grade English Language Arts in order to improve middle and high school teachers’ practice in the teaching of academic writing and improving student academic writing achievement. The exciting element of the grant is that our MSU facilitators have opened this training opportunity to any of our 5th through 12th grade teachers from any subject area.

For many of us, when we hear the phrase, “what a wonderful world,” we think of Louis Armstrong’s famous song. I think of the library! For me it is a wonder-world of books full of interesting facts (did you know that an octopus can not only change its color but also its texture?!), fascinating people (Annie Taylor was the first woman to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel!) and exciting places (ever been under the ocean in the magic school bus? It’s pretty exciting!)
