Mike Dawson, Assistant Superintendent

As you recall Missouri, along with forty-four other states, have elected to endorse the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for implementation for the 2014-15 academic year. Upon close examination, the standards prepare learners with knowledge and skills that students need to succeed for college/career readiness and provide a clear learning target for students, teachers, and parents regardless of a student’s zip code.  To measure the new standards, Missouri, along with 20+ other states, has entered into a partnership with Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC). The consortium has been charged with creating a “common” exam to be administered in all member states. Over the past several months, there has been concern surrounding the cost of the new assessment plan and the amount of time required to administer these exams, which takes away from quality classroom teaching and learning.

We Have PAWS Behavior at MES!

Our 2nd semester “boot camp” will be January 13th-17th. During boot camp, the students will be taught our behavior expectations at Monett Elementary. We will have fun while we learn by dressing up!

Monday: Dress “fancy” as we learn to be Polite and Respectful, or you can wear something blue.
Tuesday: Wear your favorite college shirt or wear yellow as we learn about how to Act Responsible.
Wednesday: Work Hard and dress like who you want to be when you grow up, or wear green.
Thursday: Stay Safe: Dress as your favorite Superhero (a superhero shirt will work, too) or wear red.
Friday:   Review our PAWS by showing our School Pride and wear purple.

Healthy Schools, Healthy Communities Is Underway

The Healthy Schools, Healthy Communities initiative that has been provided through the Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH) is underway at Monett R-1. With the overall goal to decrease childhood obesity rates by 5% in those children K-8th grade, Monett R-1’s wellness team has been off and running.

Prior to Christmas break, Cox Monett fulfilled their half of the agreement, hiring Shawn Hayden to take the Project Coordinator position that will coincide with the community aspect of this initiative. Mr. Hayden will work alongside Patty Bounous and Alex Hutchings to connect both the schools and the community, promoting an increase in both healthy eating and physical activity.

Monett R-1 School Safety
Officer Jay Jastal, School Resource Officer

Kenneth S. Trump, M.P.A., President of the National School Safety and Security Services, published the following article on school safety.
What can a parent do? What does a parent need to know? What should a parent look for related to school safety at his/her child's school?
Mr. Trump created a list of ten practical things parents can do to assess school security and emergency/crisis preparedness from a parent's perspective. The list is shared below to help parents nationwide support their school officials with their safe schools efforts.
Security and emergency preparedness measures should be balanced with strong violence prevention and intervention programs. Along with a well-disciplined and positive school climate, these elements of a comprehensive safe schools approach can play critical roles in making schools safe.
