This Week's Building Level and Departmental Updates

Monett Middle School
Michael Calhoun, MMS Athletic Director

This winter at Monett Middle School we have enjoyed watching both girls’ basketball and boys’ wrestling teams.  They were supported and cheered on during both our home basketball games and wrestling duals by our young group of cheerleaders under the direction of Victoria Costley.
Our Lady Cub basketball teams were led by Matt Anderson at 7th grade and Blair Powell at 8th grade. The 7th grade team began their season with an exciting 3rd place finish in the Triway Tournament. They finished the season with a 5-8 overall record. The 8th grade squad finished with a record of 5-9. Both teams ended their seasons strong before a loss in the conference tournament to wrap up their season. With strong work and dedication, they show promise for an exciting season next year as they continue to build on their skills.

Monett R-1 English Language Learners
Daphne Hensley, Coordinator

Our secondary level migrant and English Language Learners celebrated student success at a Parent Activity Night on December 16, 2013.   The MHS commons area provided the locale for this holiday-themed event. Over 135 students and parents attended.  The audience cheered as certificates of achievement were provided to 38 students for their academic mastery in language development. These second language learners are now meeting state English language goals in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing!
Entertainment was provided via a student-led talent show. Ben Cole channeled Frank Sinatra a capella, Katelynn Benz and Jaqueline Rodriguez provided a duet, and a local Latino dance troupe led by Ivet Mayoral brought students together for some foot stomping entertainment. A traditional dance, La Danza de Los Viejitos, had the audience laughing with the silly antics of masked, old men, and a beautiful couples dance brought romance and bullfighting.
