On March 10, the Monett R-1 Board of Education approved the bids from R.E. Smith Construction Company to begin construction on the MHS and MIS FEMA Safe Room projects. This milestone concludes a nearly sixteen-month process of planning and designing the two facilities. Construction contracts will be finalized and signed over the next month, and there is a good possibility we will see signs of construction at both sites before the end of the school year. Both facilities should be completed by the end of next school year with the official opening of both facilities planned for the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year.

Monett High School and Monett Middle School are excited to host Rachel’s Challenge on Monday, March 24th.

Rachel’s Challenge is based on the life and writings of Rachel Joy Scott, who was the first victim of the Columbine school shootings in 1999. Rachel’s father started the Rachel’s Challenge program a few weeks after the Columbine shootings. Its purpose is to equip and inspire individuals to replace acts of violence, bullying, and negativity with acts of respect, kindness, and compassion.

There are three separate hour-long Rachel’s Challenge assemblies. The first is for middle school students and will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the MMS gym. That afternoon another assembly will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the MHS gym for high school students.   An assembly specifically for the community will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the high school gym.

After a long and snowy winter, we are starting to see signs of spring. It will not be long before we will be engaging in outdoor activities and the sounds of children playing will be heard in our neighborhoods.

Unfortunately, no community is completely immune to crime, and it is sad to say there are evil people in our society who look to victimize the innocent. Most of us heard about the recent abduction and tragic death of the 10-year-old girl from Springfield. Many people in our own community have been victims but mostly due to theft, property damage, or other crimes; however, there are steps you can take to help keep your family and your neighborhood safe.

The Monett Police Department is offering tips for residents to help protect their children, themselves, and their property.
