ImageMessage from the District Office
Mike Dawson, Assistant Superintendent

This past week, Monett R-1 invited an outside consultant, free of charge, to conduct focus group meetings to evaluate our technology infrastructure, Internet security, and classroom technology.  The consultant met with teachers, administrators, and many of our technology support team members. The notes from the meetings will be synthesized and used to generate priority goals and action plans for the coming years. During the exit interview, the consultant continually commented, “I don’t visit too many district like this.” Meaning, Monett R-1 has made wise decisions, been progressive in our approach, and innovative in implementing best practice.  So why have a consultant evaluate and report how good we are? The reason we asked for an outside consultant to evaluate our program was to gain insight about ways we can improve our technology use.   As a school district, we are never satisfied with the status quo and being Student Focused and Future Driven requires our teachers and administrators to continually seek “better and different” ways to improve our services and approaches to increase student performance.

         Full-Day Preschool Session

Monett Elementary School will be offering one full-day preschool class next year! This decision was made after reviewing the needs of our students and their families. Currently, morning and afternoon sessions are offered and parents have to provide mid-day transportation. This is difficult for many working parents. By offering a full day class, students who were unable to attend preschool because of transportation will now have an opportunity.

Parents were asked after screening if they would be interested or needed a full-day program. The clear majority of parents expressed a desire for a full-day program. Hearing the needs of parents Monett R-1 made the decision to convert two half-day sessions to one full-day class. We are excited about the new offering and how it will help students and families. Next year we will continue to offer four half-day sections along with the full-day class. This will enable us to serve a similar number of students while providing an opportunity for some students to attend that were unable to in the past.

The Power of Breakfast!

Research consistently shows that students benefit from eating a nutritious breakfast prior to beginning the school day.

Without question, breakfast can help students perform better in school in a number of ways. Some benefits of eating breakfast include the following:
           More positive attitude towards school

         Less likely to be tardy
           Less likely to miss class
           Improved math and reading scores
           Fewer reported discipline problems
