Mrs. Gasser, principal of Monett Elementary School, recognized a number of students for their participation in the “morning mile.” The morning mile is a program that encourages students, faculty, and families to walk on the track prior to the start of the school day. The program was launched this summer as part the Missouri Foundation for Health Grant. Since the start of the school year, MES has had over 300 students participate in the morning mile program. During inclement weather, the students walk in the gym.
Maintenance and Operations director, Mr. Joe Fox, recognized and thanked his summer crew for the work they completed to ensure all classrooms and buildings were ready for the first day of school. This was the first year that Aramark provided oversight for summer cleaning. Dr. Hanson praised the team’s effort and work quality. What’s in a Name?
“Story Lady!” “Liberry Girl!” “Library Teacher!” “Library, Library!” These are the titles the children call out to me as I make my way through the lunchroom. Each is followed by a smile and a wave, and I smile and wave back. This is often followed by a report about how the child kept his book in a safe place or that she brought her book back today. This conversation is full of verbal exclamation points as the students of MES talk to me about library (or as they often say, “ Liberry”).
My official title is Library Media Specialist but when asked what I do for a living, I usually reply with “I’m a library teacher.” Sometimes people ask what I mean by “library teacher,” and it is my great joy to explain it to them. A library teacher, I say, is a teacher who works in the library. I get to teach children all about books. We start with the basics of how to listen to a story, and then we move on to things like how to turn the pages of a book so they don’t tear and how to carry a book so it doesn’t get dropped and other valuable book-care lessons.
Central Park is bustling with new and exciting learning in both third and fourth grades this year! We are implementing a writing program called Write Steps, which teaches children the writing process through daily writing practice. Students will be learning narrative, opinion, and informative/explanatory text. We are excited to see the creativity our students have when expressing their thoughts in written form!
In addition to writing, we are teaching students to use keyboarding. Keyboarding will help students learn to type using correct hand placement, which, in turn, will help them use our electronic devices more proficiently. This program gives students lots of practice prior to taking assessments online. We are having fun learning to type a set number of words and sentences per minute with accuracy!
