Student Focused...Future Driven

Message from the District Office
Mike Dawson, Assistant Superintendent

Over the past several months, teachers, administrators, and the Monett Board of Education have been investigating the possibility of launching a 1:1 technology learning initiative at Monett Intermediate School. To learn from our students, teachers, and parent community, Ms. Bryan, principal of MIS, crafted and administered a number of surveys to gather information about the attitudes and concerns about pursuing a 1:1 technology initiative.  At the August Board of Education Meeting, Teresa Huntress, 6th grade teacher, and Ms. Bryan presented survey results.  The data indicated that all stakeholder groups were excited about the possibility but hesitant about providing our younger students access to the Internet.
From the beginning, it was evident that a 1:1 technology initiative with ten, eleven, and twelve-year-old children would need to look significantly different from our middle school and high school 1: to the World Initiative.  Parents and teachers overwhelmingly agreed that having a laptop computer for each child would be a great learning tool. It would provide a plethora of new learning resources and provide new opportunities. Some stated that having a computer would be great, but patrons also reported their concern about protecting their children from dangers inherent in Internet access.  To safeguard our children, Monett Intermediate has made three significant decisions to protect our students.

Monett Elementary and Central Park Elementary
Guidance Services

Leslie Henry and Ryan Smith, Guidance Counselors

Mr. Smith (CPE) and Mrs. Henry (MES) serve our two elementary school students in Monett as elementary school counselors. Many people are unaware of what services these two provide in our schools. The elementary school counselor’s role is three-fold: counselor, coordinator, and consultant. The school counselor fills a need in the elementary student’s life with help of a preventive nature, and counseling is a voluntary and confidential service.

What does the elementary school counselor do?

*Works with students to provide support on school-related issues. The counseling strategies vary with each student’s needs and are provided on a short-term basis as determined by the school counselor.

*Works with parents, teachers, and administrators to provide information, materials, or referral assistance to community agencies. They also work to promote a positive learning environment.

Monett High School
Pam Schmidt, Student Senate Advisor

Fall is approaching with the scent of turning leaves, cooler weather, and the sounds of football excitement. Along with these things come the traditions of Homecoming festivities at Monett High School.
The week of Homecoming brings many happenings and a very busy week at MHS. This week consists of Spirit Days the students take part in beginning with “Mustache Monday.”  Students and teachers will spend their nights planning and constructing a float relating to our theme of “Friday Night Fiesta.” Along with that construction comes hard work, fun competition between classes, and the making of many high school memories.
