Message from the District Office Brad Hanson, Superintendent
The Monett R-1 School District is currently in the revision process for its five-year strategic plan. Our current plan, created in 2010, is set to expire at the end of 2014. This past summer, district administrators met to reflect upon the progress made towards completing the previous strategic plan and began to set their own view of priorities for the next five-year cycle of improvement.
Within the past month, the Monett R-1 School District Classroom Teacher’s Association has also taken part in providing input towards this process. Building level representatives have met with district superintendent, Dr. Brad Hanson, to reflect upon the previous strategic plan and have suggested their own ideas for our district’s future direction. These building level representatives are currently working on receiving additional feedback from their respective staffs at each campus.
Before this process is complete, the Monett R-1 School District would like to attain feedback from parents and community members. The school district is providing two opportunities for community feedback in which parents and other interested community stakeholders may participate. Exciting things are around the corner for the Monett R-1 Wellness Initiative. Monett Elementary and Monett Intermediate had the opportunity to participate in the “Morning Mile” this summer. The kids loved it, and it was a great success, as participants completed over 2,768 miles combined. This semester MES will be resuming the “Morning Mile” program, and CPE will be joining. CPE started towards the end of September allowing students to participate in the gym prior to the start of the school day.
Many great opportunities await both the students and faculty this semester. Monett R-1 will be participating in the “Fitter Kids” challenge,” “Family Table” challenge, “Cubs on the Run” Couch-to-5K Training, International Walk-to-School Day Octobe 6th, 7th and 8th and many more activities! Employees are currently competing for prizes in the “Fall into Fitness” mileage challenge.
In Mr. Dawson’s latest Cub Pride article, he addressed some of our plans for implementation of a 1:1 laptop initiative at MIS. I would like to also share some of our plans that we believe will not only help keep our kids and equipment safe but will also, we believe, allow students and staff to use the technology as a true learning tool. Whether the laptop is being used in the classroom or at home, we want it to be a learning tool for students.
Technology (including laptops and computers) is not a new learning tool at MIS. Students have had access to technology in the classroom for many years. We currently have laptops, desktop computers, and iPads available for students to use as learning tools in each classroom. What will change at MIS is that when it is warranted, we will begin allowing students—all or some—to take these devices home so that they can continue their learning after school hours. At MIS, we strive to use the best tool for optimum learning. This will not change just because we are adding a tool to our tool belt. We will continue to use the other effective learning tools that we have been using as we strive to improve student achievement.
