Message from the District Office Mike Dawson, Assistant Superintendent
During the week of October 20th, Monett R-1 will be hosting parent-teacher conferences. We have the privilege of hosting hundreds of parents to share the great things about our schools, how we love children unconditionally, and to report the progress and challenges for each child. These conferences are not only important to learn more about your child’s academic, social, and emotional strengths and challenges, but are also an opportunity to connect with your child’s teachers. Your attendance communicates that school is valued and important and that the work being completed is worthy of our time and attention. Nothing is more powerful than creating a positive partnership with your child’s teacher to create an unbreakable learning bond between home and school. Once kids see school and home on the same page and working together, kids are more motivated to take their learning to the next level.
Being personally connected to the classroom is vital for student performance, but staying informed about classroom, school, and district news also helps families stay linked to our learning community. One way to stay connected is through our school website. Teachers regularly post classroom information and student assignments. In addition, this fall the district launched our own Smartphone mobile app, Monett R-1. Monett R-1 puts all of the important information in one easy-to-use location. Users can access district news, calendars, staff directory, and more. It even provides one-touch access to PowerSchool accounts to monitor daily attendance and posted grades. We hope you’ll take advantage of these information streams to be informed and connected to your school community.
The fall sports season is off and running. We have had a busy summer, and it continues in the fall. I’m proud of all the work that our coaches and student athletes have put into the off-season. Their hard work has translated into success on and off the field this year. I am especially proud of the way that our student body has come together to support many of our student athletes at their games. I’m excited about the culture change that is occurring in our kids. “Sportsmanship is becoming fun at MHS.”
Promoting sportsmanship has always been a focus for our administration at MHS. We want to promote an opportunity for a fun, positive cheering experience for everyone. The students are cheering loudly for our teams without being negative towards the other team and officials. The support for our teams has been outstanding this fall, and that support has helped us gain a home field advantage. The following are a few highlights from the fall.
Professional Development is a key component of many jobs, and teaching is no exception. Teachers are constantly learning and developing their skills and reigniting their passion. One component of professional development is collaborating with other teachers. Learning and sharing with other teachers can be a valuable asset in any school. While we can all learn from any other person, it is always beneficial to discuss our profession with someone who does the same thing we do. Most schools do this through departmental, grade level, or some type of team comprised of teachers teaching the same class or subject/grade level. In career and technical education (CTE), it can be more difficult because most times you must look outside the district to find a colleague who teaches the same content.
Finding time to bring together teachers from several districts can be difficult but rewarding. In the spring of 2014, a plan was formed to have the first of what we hope is many southwest area professional development days. CTE directors from Nevada, Lamar, Lebanon, and Monett met to plan the first such development day for September 26, 2014, at Scott Tech in Monett.
