New Directors Join Monett R-1 Team
Dr. Mike Dawson, Assistant Superintendent

Monett R-1 will be adding some new faces to the leadership team, and this Cub Pride article has been crafted to introduce the new faces that will be leading our technology department, food service, maintenance and operations, and health service.
Technology Director - Stephen McMillin

At the April Board meeting, the Board of Education approved Melody Paige's letter announcing her retirement.  Melody has faithfully served the Monett learning community for nineteen years and has assisted countless students, teachers, and administrators doing "old things in new ways."  The district is thankful for Melody's leadership and wishes her well in the next phase of her career.  Even though Melody is stepping down as Technology Director, she will be employed part-time to explore and develop blended learning opportunities for our secondary students.

The district is excited to announce that Steven McMillin has been promoted as the Monett R-1 District Technology Director.  Steven has been a help desk supervisor and district level technician for the past three years.  Prior to Monett, Steven served as a support specialist at Missouri Southern State University.  "Steven has the right combination of leadership, technology skills, and service to move our district forward," stated Dr. Brad Hanson, Monett R-1 Superintendent of Schools.  Steven will officially start his new duties on July 1, 2015.
Food Service Director - Helen Wink

For the past five years OPAA!, has prepared and served thousands of student and faculty meals.  Janie White, Food Service Director and OPAA!, has been instrumental with assisting the district to meet the requirements of the Healthy Hunger Free Act of 2010.  This past year, ARAMARK was awarded the food service management contract for the next five years, and with this award comes new leadership.  Helen Wink has been named the new Aramark Food Service Director.  Helen, a Monett resident, has served the district as a baker, cook, and most recently, Kitchen Manager of Monett Intermediate/Monett Middle School kitchen.  Under Helen’s leadership in the Intermediate/Middle School kitchen, she successfully helped transition and transform her kitchen as it moved to the new FEMA shelter in January.  Helen brings experience, background, and proven leadership to the team.
Maintenance and Operations Director - Tony McBroom

Under the direction of ARAMARK, Joe Fox served the district for two years as the Director of Maintenance and Operations.  With the assistance of ARAMARK and Joe’s leadership, the district was able to reduce costs, increase services, and provide important on-the-job training.  Joe will be transitioning to Springfield next year, and we wish him the best in his new endeavor.  Tony McBroom has been named the new Director of Maintenance and Operations.  Tony, who is well respected for his knowledge, leadership, and skill, has been the lead maintenance technician, working directing with Joe Fox.  Prior to Monett Schools, Tony McBroom served as lead maintenance technician with My Place Realty Company in Clarksville, Tennessee.
Health Service Coordinator - Kristen Earnest

Carole Hamm has faithfully served the district for fifteen years as a school nurse and served as the Monett R-1 Coordinator of Health Services for three years.  Mrs. Hamm has been a tremendous resource to many students, families, and faculty.  Carole will be retiring at the end of the school year and is planning to spend more time with her grandchildren.  Kristen Earnest has been approved as the new Health Services Coordinator and will begin her duties in July.  Kristen is a registered nurse, earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Missouri Southern State University.  Kristen has served as a charge nurse of Mercy Hospital in Joplin and most recently, as a House Manager for the Missouri Rehabilitation Center in Mt. Vernon.  Kristen brings a depth of knowledge and service to the district.

Monett R-1 Athletics
Daryl Bradley, Athletic Director

On Friday May 8th, 2015, the Monett High School Athletic Department had its Annual All-Sport Banquet at SRTC, celebrating this past year’s sport seasons.  The head coach of each sport gave a season summary and awarded a “Cub Award,” which is awarded to an outstanding individual who exhibits the following qualities:
The 2015 Cub Award winners were the following:
Jacob Negre (Football); Madyson Glouse (Volleyball); Kendall Bounous (Softball); Hannah Pitts (Girls Tennis); Dalton Paynter (Boys Cross Country);  Janie Salas (Girls Cross Country); Jairo Rueda (Boys Soccer); Christopher Smith (Boys Swimming & Diving); Emma Schupbach (Cheerleading); McKenna Mahl (Dance); Katie Tinklepaugh (Girls Basketball); Cameron Witt (Boys Basketball); Kedric Brink (Wrestling); Alex Bahl (Girls Swimming & Diving); Hunter Witt (Baseball); Jeremy McVay (Golf); George Fulton (Boys Tennis); Raegan Nolan (Girls Soccer); Levi Pfitzner (Boys Track); and Myra Dierker (Girls Track).
This year was a banner year for athletics at Monett High School, highlighted by four district championships, a state semi-finalist appearance in football, and a third place finish at state in softball.  We honored several all-conference, all-district, and all-state performers.  Of all of the awards that were presented, I enjoyed handing out the 4-year participant awards to our senior athletes who participated in a sport for their entire high school career.  I especially enjoyed handing out a 4-year, 3-sport athlete award to senior Nathan Webb, who participated in soccer, basketball, and golf.  In today’s world, this is an uncommon accomplishment.
The high school sports landscape has changed over the years with more kids having to work, specializing in one sport, or just getting burned out, making these awards special.  I can attribute the continued participation to the wonderful leadership of our coaching staff.  The coaches not only teach the Xs and Os, they also teach the Ys of life.  I’m very proud of our coaches and their leadership.  We look forward to continued success in the future.
