Message from the District Office
Dr. Michael Evans, Assistant Superintendent

††††††††††† On Friday afternoon, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education released the Annual Performance Reports (APR) for every school district in the state.† There are 140 points possible divided among five standards:† Academic Achievement, Subgroup Achievement, College and Career Readiness, Attendance, and Graduation Rate.† While all of these are important measures, the first two standards account for 70 of the 140 points. †I am pleased to tell you that Monett Schools saw a significant increase in these two areas, which improved our APR score from 85.7% to 90.7%.† Way to go Cubs!!!† But how do districts earn points for Academic Achievement and Subgroup Achievement?† Standardized testing.

††††††††††† I knowÖ itís not a popular topic in education these days, and I must confess that I am conflicted about the importance that is placed on this single snapshot of information.† In fact, I could write an entire article on the history of standardized testing in America, the proís and conís, what the results really mean, the statistical issues, etc., but itís not the most exciting topic. †No matter how we may feel about the role of standardized testing, the ďtestĒ is here to stay in one form or another.† And it isnít just in education.†

Jennifer Wallace, Principal

†††† Autumn has arrived, and with the season comes one of the busiest times of the school year at Central Park!† Parent-teacher conferences began the first of the month and continue throughout this week.† Teachers have been contacting parents and are eager to share the growth and progress made by students.† Thank you to all of our parents who have participated in conferences this month.† We appreciate you!

†††† We had our first quarter academic celebration, The Big Event, on October 15th.† Individual certificates were given to students by their teachers to recognize them for their efforts and growth so far this year.† Part of the day was spent walking to North Park, playing, and then walking back to Central Park.† The students had a great time, and the weather was absolutely amazing!† Future Big Events will take place at the end of each quarter to recognize students and their successes in academic, leadership, or social skills.

†††† Central Park participated in Monettís Trunk-or-Treat this past Saturday.† We decorated two trunks using a beach theme.† It was an extremely busy evening, and we loved seeing so many of our Central Park students and their families!
