 Cub Pride
Student Focused...Future Driven

Message from the District Office
Dr. Brad Hanson, Superintendent of Schools

As residents and visitors alike drive into Monett, many notice the prominent billboards welcoming visitors to a city of “Pride and Progress.” I have often written about the progress we have seen over the years in partnership with the school district and its patrons; however, this week I want to point out the aspect of Monett “Pride.”

The picture above was taken from my vantage point towards the end of the state championship football game at Plaster Stadium on the Missouri State University campus the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  What a sea of Purple and Gold!  It is hard for me to explain in words the immense sense of pride I felt for our kids and our entire community as I looked up into those stands.  This was such an awesome display of pride for our student athletes and coaches who had risen to the pinnacle of their sport and were representing our community in a very positive manner.

Monett High School
Mr. David Williams Principal

Happy Holidays from Monett High School!

2016-2017 has already proven to be a fantastic school year and one that will be remembered for years to come.  The Cub soccer team competed in the state final game, football clinched its first state championship since 1977, and cross country and boys swimming both sent competitors to state level competition.  The Cub Pride Band and Choir programs have also sent representatives to both state and national competitions.  At home, the drama department put on one of the best plays in memory.  The art department and art club students completed a gorgeous mural on Broadway that will be a source of pride for generations.  Individual students have stepped forward and organized fundraisers for charities that will benefit students internationally in Colombia and the Ukraine.  The student sections at our games are becoming famous for their loud and positive support of our athletic teams.

The most exciting part of it is...we aren’t even quite halfway through the year!  I cannot wait to see what more our Cubs will accomplish before the end of this school year.  Bring the Roar, Monett Cubs!  People are listening.

Monett R-1 Departmental Updates:
Mrs. Daphne Hensley, ELL Coordinator

ELL Standards and Framework

To promote language learning in ways that are helpful to students and teachers, six years ago Missouri joined WIDA, the World Class Instructional Design & Assessment consortium.  Missouri has adopted WIDA’s standards and framework to provide better instruction and better assessment for a growing ELL population.  As part of a standards-based learning approach, Monett R-1 applies WIDA’s scaffolded structures to foster students’ language acquisition.
WIDA’s English Language Development Standards are divided into grade level clusters for grades pre-kindergarten to 12 and address a specific context for language acquisition.  Three features are imbedded into the standards:  the quantity and variety of oral and written responses, grammar and conventions, and vocabulary usage.  The standards directly reflect the social and academic language expectations of English Language Learners (ELLs).
To be successful in school, it is critical for students to acquire and to negotiate language in various academic contexts.  Students have to know what they are learning and where they are in the learning process.  Thus, WIDA has generated performance definitions for both expressive and receptive language.  The format of these performance definitions is...
